Laser skin resurfacing, commonly called a laser peel, removes the outer, damaged layer of skin to reveal a smoother, younger and more evenly pigmented layer of skin. Laser resurfacing can reduce the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven pigmentation and superficial scarring, usually on the face. A fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser beam of precisely focused light vaporizes the surface skin and reveals the undamaged layer beneath. This procedure is performed under local anesthetic in the office. Recovery time is usually approximately one week during which the vaporized layer of skin is shed to reveal a fresh new layer of skin. Strict sun avoidance and protection measures must be taken for one month after resurfacing to allow optimal healing and decrease any risk of pigmentary change.
