As time passes, our skin shows the natural, inevitable signs of aging - wrinkles, sagging, and sun damage. Cosmetic dermatology means that you don't have to live with those effects anymore. Non-surgical cosmetic procedures available at our practice allow you to smooth lines and wrinkles, raise sunken areas, reduce blemishes and scarring, tighten sagging skin, and generally produce fresh, glowing skin so you can look as young and rejuvenated as you feel.
We also offer surgical cosmetic procedures that can reshape many areas by removing excess fat and skin and toning muscle; and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines, sun damage and sagging skin that can make you look angry, sad or tired.
BOTOX Cosmetic is commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to smooth crow's feet, frown and worry lines, and lines on the neck. Made from a purified protein, BOTOX relaxes wrinkles and gives the face a rejuvenated look. BOTOX may also be useful for migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and eye and neck muscle spasms.
Dysport is formulated to deliver temporary improvement to frown lines, softening the look of wrinkles. With continued use, your furrows lines will decrease overtime, giving you a younger, refreshed look. Dysport blocks the signal from the nerve to your muscles, reducing its activity and preventing the contraction of the muscle. The treatment takes only 10-20 minutes, and the results can be seen within a week!
Xeomin addresses the muscles between your brows, preventing them from contracting when you squint or frown. Constant furrowing and folding of the skin can create deep furrows that can make you look angry at rest. Xeomin blocks these repeated contractions to avoid forming those frown lines, keeping the natural look of your face.
Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes and pre-cancerous growths to produce healthy, glowing skin. Peel formulas and strengths are tailored to each patient. Peels can be combined with other procedures such as facelifts for a younger look. Batra Dermatology is proud to carry a variety of chemical peels, including the VI® Peel, TCA peels, and the Cosmelan MD® Peel.
Vitality Institute (VI) Peel is a chemical exfoliant designed to improve the texture and clarity of your skin, diminish skin discolorations, reduce the appearance of pore size, soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve acneic skin conditions, and stimulate collagen and elastin production. It maintains your skin to keep it healthy, youthful, and radiant no matter what your age. VI Peel is safe for all skin types, even those with sensitive skin conditions. You can expect a week of downtime as your skin sloughs.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) Peel
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels remove dead skin cells and uncover a "new" layer of skin that appears smoother and more vibrant. As a result, it softens fine lines, minimizes superficial brown spots and other skin discolorations, and generally improves the tone and texture of your skin. TCA peels are also very popular for diminishing the appearance of hyperpigmented acne scars. They are considered medium-depth peels. They reach slightly deeper into the skin than alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peel and thus often produce stronger results. These peels also have the advantage of being suitable for most skin types, including darker-toned skin. Best results are seen after a series of 3 peels, and treatments are usually spaced out 4-6 weeks apart. You can expect flaking of the treated skin for about 5-7 days after the treatment.
Cosmelan MD® Peel
Cosmelan MD is a prescription strength chemical peel targeted at frustrating brown spots that never seem to fade, including melasma, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation. It's safe, effective, and compatible with all skin types. It works by both lightening existing discoloration and inhibiting the body’s biological process that causes skin darkening. Each treatment comes with a take home kit to assist you in maximizing your results and we always offer touch-up treatments for the stubborn darker spots. You can expect a solid week of downtime while your skin is sloughing.
Juvéderm® Injectable Gel
Juvéderm Injectable Gel is a safe, effective gel that restores volume to the skin and smoothes away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Juvéderm is the first FDA-approved dermal filler proven safe and effective for persons of color. The Juvéderm gel is made of hyaluronic acid with a smooth consistency, allowing for easy injections and instant, natural-looking results. There is no pre-testing needed for this procedure.
Perlane® is an injectable filler used to treat deep facial lines, augment the lips and contour the cheeks and chin. Made by the same company that produces Restylane®, Perlane contains purified hyaluronic acid, a sugar found naturally in the body that works with collagen to keep the skin smooth and supple. It is hypoallergenic and does not require a pre-treatment skin test. With its unique ability to bind with water, Perlane continues to perform up to 60% longer than collagen.
Radiesse is a synthetic injectable filler that reduces wrinkles, creases and scars by augmenting the body's natural collagen supply. It can be used on many areas of the body, including the lips, nasolabial folds, peri-oral lines, depressed scars and oral commissures. Treatments typically take 15 minutes and require only local anesthetic. Results are visible immediately after the injection and can last for months or years.
Restylane is designed to smooth wrinkles, sculpt lips and shape facial contours. It is a clear, synthetic gel made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is found throughout your body. It carries little risk of allergic reaction. The most common areas for treatment are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows) and the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of your mouth). With its unique ability to bind with water, Restylane remains in your skin for many months.
Belotero Balance replaces lost hyaluronic acid caused by the natural aging process. Once injected, it instantly plumps the skin and smooths the lines and wrinkles on your face. Belotero Balance can quickly integrate into your skin for results that are uniquely you. We love using Belotero Balance for those fine, superficial lines, such as the upper lip, that are difficult to address with the other thicker fillers.
Stem Cell Facelift
The Stem Cell Facelift takes advantage of a component of your blood termed "platelet-rich plasma" that, when injected into your skin, stimulates your skin's own collagen to grow. It is loaded with growth factors and, because it is derived from your own blood, there is minimal chance of any allergy or intolerance. The procedure involves drawing your blood and extracting the platelet-rich plasma from its serum. Then, filler (e.g. Restylane or Juvederm) is injected with your blood components to prop up your skin where there is volume loss. As the filler gets metabolized by your body over the next 4-6 months, the platelet-rich plasma works to stimulate collagen growth in the treated areas. This allows your skin to naturally fill in the volume loss.
As the years pass, our skin experiences volume loss which is a telltale sign of aging. Voluma is a new filler on the market specifically designed to rewind the aging process by restoring volume to provide a youthful contour for your skin. It plumps up sunken cheeks, fills in hollowed lower cheeks, and restores the curvature your cheeks may have lost over the years. Unlike other fillers, Voluma is long-lasting, maintaining your results for up to 2 years! Like its cousin Juvederm, Voluma is derived from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring complex sugar found in your joints, making it safe to use. Are you a good candidate for Voluma? Lasers produce a beam of light in a single wavelength with variable intensity and pulse rate that is capable of precisely cutting, sealing or vaporizing tissue such as skin and blood vessels. Laser light is absorbed by water or dark pigments (melanin in skin, hemoglobin in blood) in the tissue and converted to heat. A variety of functional and cosmetic skin problems are treatable with lasers, which are often specialized to handle a particular type of problem.
Lasers offer many advantages over traditional, mechanical technology, including replacement of scalpels, reduced risk of infection, “bloodless” surgery, less scarring, high precision, limited injury, and faster procedures. We offer many state-of-the-art lasers described below.
Vbeam® Perfecta by Candela
Below is an overview of the laser procedures our Vbeam® laser addresses.
Vascular lesions are abnormally superficial, dense collections of blood vessels. They can be treated with a pulsed dye laser, which is absorbed by the blood while leaving surrounding tissue intact. Laser treatment effectively cauterizes the affected vessel and resolves the lesion and its resultant redness.
Pigmented lesions are dark growths of skin such as freckles or sun spots. Their color is due to the lesions' high melanin content. The most common pigment in the body, melanin readily absorbs laser light. Laser treatment destroys only the pigmented area without damaging the surrounding tissue.
Scars & Stretch Marks
Laser treatment can significantly improve the color and texture of scars and stretch marks, particularly when these are new. Scars or stretch marks treated with lasers tend to have a shorter duration and intensity of redness and a generally smoother, softer texture that blends better with surrounding skin.
The laser aims carefully controlled pulses of narrow-wavelength light at the damaged veins. The veins absorb the light and heat up, then collapse and close. They are then gradually re-absorbed by the body. Normal activities can be resumed immediately.
Acne is a common inflammatory skin condition resulting from clogged sebaceous glands. In recent years, lasers have been proven to be very effective adjunctive treatment of acne. The laser light is absorbed by water underneath the skin, shrinking oil glands and decreasing the counts of bacteria that contribute to acne.
Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing
CO2 is a Carbon Dioxide laser that has been used for more than 25 years in the Aesthetic Industry for treatment of skin conditions such as fine and coarse wrinkles, scars of various origin, uneven pigmentation, and dilated pores. When a CO2 beam of light comes in contact with the epidermis, it heats and vaporizes the skin tissue, instantly removing the superficial layers of the skin, scars, and wrinkles, while smoothing out the surface of the skin. This skin remodeling occurs with new skin and collagen growth.
Fractional Skin Resurfacing is a revolutionary delivery system that increases the possibilities for busy people who want healthy, younger looking skin with minimal pain in a short period of time. Using a computerized pattern generator and a new scanning algorithm, thermal heat is dispersed within the epidermis while evenly treating damaged areas. This particular algorithm dramatically reduces pain, the need for anesthesia, and recovery time. Single treatments can show a significant improvement in skin texture and color. Fractional laser treats areas in a grid-like pattern, allowing residual areas to expedite healing and decrease the risk of permanent pigment change or scarring.
TriPollar® Radio-Frequency Skin Tightening
TriPollar Radio Frequency (RF) technology delivers immediate visible contouring effects from the first treatment - and long-lasting aesthetic results without surgery or downtime. Popular treatment areas include the abdomen, neck, eyelids, and inner thighs. The RF energy heats the skin below its surface, causing collagen fibers to contract, resulting in immediate wrinkle reduction. This same heat stimulates fibroblast cells to generate new collagen to yield long term wrinkle reduction. TriPollar is optimal for those with a busy lifestyle who cannot afford any downtime. You can tighten your skin with TriPollar and resume normal activities immediately.
CoolSculpting® Fat Reduction
CoolSculpting is a noninvasive, nonsurgical device that uses cooling technology to deliver highly effective and safe fat reduction. It selectively affects fat cells by cooling them to temperatures that trigger them to die and become absorbed by the body. There are no changes in adjacent nerves or other tissues because they are not affected by the specific temperature to which fat cells respond. Once the dead fat cells are absorbed by the body, the fat layer is significantly reduced!
The best part about CoolSculpting? You can return to your normal activities right after treatment without anyone knowing what you did! CoolSculpting is designed for the busy American lifestyle; you can check your email or even work online during your treatments while you are hooked up to the machine. While the beginning of the treatment can be slightly uncomfortable, after about ten minutes, the remainder of the procedure is painless. Book your consultation today to see if you are a candidate for CoolSculpting!
Upper Eyelid Lifts/Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can rejuvenate puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient's field of vision. The procedure is usually performed in an office with local anesthesia in as little as 45 minutes. Blepharoplasty can be combined with BOTOX® treatments to raise the eyebrows or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow's feet or dark circles under the eyes.
Surgical treatment of the aging face and neck has historically been viewed as going in for a facelift and coming out with a new look. The downside, however, to the traditional facelift has always been its cost, recovery time, and the risk of coming out of surgery with a pulled, unnatural look. New advances in cosmetic surgery favor a minimally invasive approach with natural results. While it is true that some patients benefit most from a full facelift, many will achieve superb results with treatment of the neck alone or in combination with other easier and less invasive procedures than a full facelift.
Neck liposuction, plastyma repair, and neck lift are very effective ways to treat changes to the lower part of the face and neck caused by aging. Because so many people develop changes to the jaw line as one of the first signs of aging, these procedures can produce dramatic changes in a patient’s appearance. By targeting the source of the problem, the need for a full facelift and its potential complications is eliminated.
The neck and jaw line are critically important features of the adult face. Telltale signs of advancing age are often first noticed in these areas. The procedures discussed below are targeted to produce a more youthful and natural look with minimally invasive, targeted therapy.
As people age, gravity and time can cause the skin to sag, leading to the formation of jowls and slack skin around the neck. Neck liposuction can dramatically reduce this prominent sign of aging by creating a more youthful neck and jaw line. Since skin retains much of its elasticity as we age, the neck and jaw can be reshaped by removing excess fat from the neck and cheeks through small incisions under the chin. The skin then re-drapes itself along the jaw line for a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance. This is performed under local anesthetic in the office.
Some individuals, particularly women, will develop linear vertical ridges on the neck that are known as platysmal bands. The platysma is a thin muscular sheet located just under the skin. With time, the fibers of this muscle can weaken, causing prominent midline bands, as well as the appearance of a loose, shapeless neck. Repair of the platysma muscle can dramatically improve the contour and shape of the neck. At the conclusion of the liposuction procedure, the platysma muscle can be tightened through a small incision that is hidden under the chin. A few well-placed sutures under the skin help to tighten the muscle, and the shape of the neck is restored to a more youthful appearance.
Patients with excess skin at the jaw line and neck and a poorly defined jaw line are good candidates for a neck lift. An incision is made in front of the ear and extended under and behind the ear to remove excess skin. Care is taken to camouflage the scar to the greatest extent possible. Sutures are placed under the skin for tightening.
The most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the U.S., liposuction sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat that has not responded to diet and exercise from areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms.Local anesthesia or general anesthesia may be used, and the procedure can last anywhere from one to five hours depending on the amount of fat being removed.
There are several different methods surgeons use when performing liposuction, including ultrasound-assisted lipectomy (UAL) and suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL). In both types, fluid is injected into the area to be treated. Then a tiny incision is made in as inconspicuous a place as possible, and a cannula (small tube) breaks up the fat layer and suctions it out.
Scar revision is performed to reduce the appearance of scars caused by injury or previous surgery. Scars are by definition permanent, but surgery can narrow, fade and otherwise reduce the appearance of severe or unattractive scarring, which is especially helpful in areas of cosmetic importance such as the face and hands.
There are many surgical methods of scar revision, only some of which may be appropriate for a particular type of scar or its location. These include surgical excision, skin grafts, flap surgery and Z-plasty (repositioning a scar so that it aligns with the face and is less noticeable). The effectiveness of scar reduction depends on a number of factors, including the nature of the injury, your body's healing mechanism, the size and depth of the wound, how much blood supplies the area and the thickness and color of your skin.
Torn Earlobe Repair
Over time, a pierced earlobe can become stretched if a person frequently wears large or heavy earrings. In addition to creating a long or wide opening, earrings may tear completely through the lobe. A torn earlobe may also result from trauma, such as having an earring pulled off or caught on clothing.
Torn earlobes can be repaired with a quick in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia.
Torn earlobe repair first involves "freshening" the edges of the torn lobe by removing a small amount of skin. Then, using fine sutures, the earlobe is meticulously repaired to reconstruct a normal, rounded earlobe that matches your natural ear shape.
You will be able to return home immediately after the procedure, with only a small bandage covering the stitches. The stitches will be removed after one to two weeks. When the earlobe has healed and the scar has softened, you may re-pierce the repaired earlobe. It takes about three months for the earlobe to fully heal.
