What get a Skin Check?
At Batra Dermatology, we take pride in our attention to detail during your full body skin checks. Why do we recommend yearly skin exams? Skin cancer is already the #1 cancer in the United States and is still on the rise. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, found by physician skin checks tend to be at an earlier stage (which is easier to cure) than those found by patients self-examinations. If you have a family history of melanoma, we recommend that you at least maintain routine self-skin examinations, but be sure to book an appointment if are unsure about a changing mole.
Even without a family history of skin cancer, living in Los Angeles, we worry about the sun-related skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which are more common than melanoma. If you've had sunburns in your childhood, you are at risk for these types of skin cancers and should book yearly skin checks to catch these cancers before they progress. During your skin checks is a perfect time to bring up any spots that you are worried about!
Skin cancer is 100% treatable if caught early. The end of the year appointments fill up fast, so book your appointment today to mark your skin exam off the 2013 to-do list!
