What is a Cortisone Injection?
Cystic acne can be a very frustrating experience at any age. Sometimes even with oral and topical medications, inflammatory cysts can break through, leading to painful, raised bumps. Depending on the degree of inflammation, we start to worry about acne scarring; the inflammation from the cyst can affect the subcutaneous fat below your skin, leaving a boxcar-indented scar at the site of occurrence.
If these type of raised, inflamed cysts occur, you have the option of coming to our office and having them treated with a cortisone shot. The cortisone not only reduces inflammation quicker than waiting for it to go down on its own, but it also decreases the risk of permanent scarring. While not meant as a primary treatment method for cystic acne, cortisone injections are a good option for raised cystic pimples lasting longer than a week, or if you need a cyst to disappear fast before an event.
